Hope

Hope, a Standardbred mare, was rescued from slaughter in 2011. If she hadn’t “lied” about her age (she was 17, we thought she was under 12), we probably would not have bought her. We usually only rescue younger horses so that we are more likely to be able to find them permanent homes. This was a fortunate mistake by us. Despite her age and an old leg injury, she turned out to be a cheerful, spunky, fun little horse.
Her feet were in really bad shape, but other than that Hope was in pretty good condition. We think the previous owners sent her to auction because she was no longer able to work hard. So sad.
After her time as a great therapy horse at Gateway, Hope became a companion to a horse that was very depressed. She was just the friend Molly needed.
Lesson learned: All life is valuable, has purpose, and is worth saving.

Update: Sadly we got news from Hope’s adoptive family that she passed away on October 6, 2021 at the age of 27. She enjoyed 10 bonus years because of our rescue and the kindness of those who gave her a wonderful retirement home for the last 6 years. You will be greatly missed Hope. Thank you for touching our lives.
